U.S. general's 'Satan' remarks lead to investigation
Last Updated Tue, 21 Oct 2003 17:20:15
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has announced an investigation into recent
speeches by a senior U.S. general who described the war on terrorism as a
conflict between Christianity and the forces of evil.
Army Lt.-Gen. William G. Boykin has also said God was responsible for
George Bush being elected U.S. president. "We're a Christian nation," he
was quoted as saying. "Our foundation and our roots are Judeo-Christian..
And the enemy is a guy named Satan."
Boykin has made several speeches at evangelical Christian churches. In his
talks, he portrayed the campaign against terrorism as a religious battle.
News media in the United States reported his comments this week, showing
him dressed in an army uniform complaining about Muslim warlords
worshipping idols.
Boykin is deputy undersecretary of defence for intelligence, and is
responsible for tracking down key leaders of al-Qaeda as well as former
Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
Last Friday, two senior leaders in Congress wrote to Defence Secretary
Donald Rumsfeld asking for an investigation.
Boykin issued an apology and requested an internal investigation of his
behaviour.
Some Islamic leaders in the United States have called on the White House
to have Boykin reassigned.
