Anybody here remember President Jimmy Carter? Today is his birthday. He is the first American president to be born in a hospital.
I remember how it broke his heart when a mission to rescue hostages went horribly wrong. I also remember how few recriminations I heard at the time. I also remember when he was interview by Penthouse and admited to the "sin" of lusting after women in his heart, and that yes, it was the same as commiting adultery.
I remember his perennial embarassment over the antics of his brother Billy. I remember the grace of Miz Lillian, his mother. And I remember the quiet strength of his wife, Rosalyn.
I remember how my grandmother, a Republican, broke ranks with her party for the first and only time to vote for him.
He is a good man, was a good man when the country had lost faith in politicians because of Watergate.
Happy Birthday, Jimmeh Cahtah.
Now, how about this: I found a chestnut tree growing in my neighborhood in an empty lot. Pictures have been taken, and I am sending them along to the American Chestnut Foundation for identification. It's doubtful it's an American Chestnut, but it could be a hybrid of an American chestnut with a Chinese, Japanese, or European chestnut.
Pictures can be seen here: Chestnut tree
For those that don't know, the American Chestnut was almost wiped out by blight. Geneticists are working on a blight-resistant variation, and hopefully this magnificent tree will return.
How are Jimmy Carter and the American Chestnut related? He's a member of the ACF, and his picture is on their website.
