This ad is being used by Amnesty International to raise awareness of female genital mutilation. I think it's incredibly well done, what's your opinion?
It is beautiful, but ... before I read your post that accompanied the photo, I looked at the flower and said to myself, "oh, it's labia and a clitoris." Hmmm. I don't know whether to think it's too obvious, or not. Either way it's a very beautifully rendered image.
I agree that the picture is well done. I once read a article about a woman who, as a young girl in the Middle East, was forced to undergo such a procedure. It was tragic that it was her mother who took her to the doctor who mutilated her. It was horrible reading this woman write about how lucky she was to have been born into a wealthy family. Because of her father's wealth, she got to have anaesthetic during the procedure.
I did read about this issue in a fourth year uni course; I think the image works because I get it and I doubt I would have gotten it when I was little, so young minds are protected from Teh Innuendoeses.
Then again, I was a rather thick kid, who never got the dirty jokes until long after all the other kids did.
