I don't know from nothing when it comes to Australian politics, other than federal elections are mandatory, and they have a system that is wildly different from US. But I just read something that pulled me WAY up short:

Australia's first female Deputy Prime Minister was once called "deliberately barren" as an aspersion on her leadership ability.

"Deliberately barren".

They say that like it's a bad thing, methinks.

Consider the opposite - calling the incumbent a "useless wanker" implies that he is guilty of the sin of Onan and is deliberately using inefficient methods to avoid conception - and failing.

Oh, but without the base understanding of Australian Politics, ya just can't understand HOW funny it really was.. massive case of foot-in-mouth disorder..

After the barren-ness poke, they tried to discredit Julia by running TV ads letting people know that (HORROR!) she'd acted as legal counsel for an industrial Union... imagine that.. smart, qualified, committed to a cause.. obviously no good for politics!
