I am willing to absolutely BET that someone abandoned that critter for whatever reason. I mean, dude, I have never heard of a hedgehog get anywhere near that huge! Good grief! It looks like an echidna!
I, on the other hand, had no idea they were that small. I mean, Jara would be about 6 pounds, and while I expect them to be smaller than her, I'd never realised that she was four times their size. That means they weigh well under a kilo! Most rabbits dwarf them!
I guess the last time I saw one in person, I was six, but even Dylan's photos don't give the impression they're that tiny...
They look bigger than they are when they make their quills stand on end; the quills in general make them look big. I think I posted about Oona squeezing through a hole that I thought was too small...
That's fair - though given that many animals (mice stand out here) can fit through any gap they can manage to squeeze their skulls through, that surprised me a lot less than you might expect.
I imagine she's got her quills up in many of the photos where you've got her in your hands, but she always looks a sizable handful.
Yes, I think a healthy weight is between 1 and 1.5 pounds. When I pick up Oona, I can tell she's not getting fat because her tummy--past the fur, anyway--feels rather firm; she's a hedgie with a wheel to run on, y'know?
The worst horror story I heard was a re-home job where I believe the previous caretaker's last words were "Make sure he gets his daily chocolate, he loves that." There are some things they should never eat...
