Archeology: Lupercale found?
Nov. 21st, 2007 11:50 amThe Lupercale (Loo-pur-ca-leh) was the cave where a wolf suckled the mythological twins Romulus and Remus on the banks of the Tiber river. Now a vaulted and decorated cavern has been located near the ruins of the palace of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.
The cavern is 16m (52') underground, and was decorated with mosaics and shells. This may have been a ritual seat of power, claimed by Augustus in order to boost his claim to rule.
Reuters has an article, pictures and video of the find.
