I've lived in Yosemite Valley for two and a half years--almost. I'm within spitting distance. One thing I've learned from experience; Socks are important.

Now, don't cringe at this next statement. Wool socks are best. No, really. Honest. They last the longest, give the best cushioning, actually disperse heat in summer, and keep my feet warm in winter.

I will never buy cotton socks again. EVAR.

P.S. Merino wool is best.

Depends on your needs, I guess. Asagwe finds cotton socks are the only ones that don't make his feet rot, and I'm mildly allergic to wool. Still, it sounds like you've found what works for you, and with the amount of walking you do, I imagine that's a very welcome discovery!

Also, has it really been that long?? Wow.

Yes, I arrived May 6th, 2005. It's really been that long.

Two days before I arrived in Maine, incidentally.

I really need to get around to unpacking the rest of those boxes in the basement...

I tend toward straight wool in the winter and wool over cotton in the summer, because wool makes my feet itch when I get sweaty. Can't beat it for insulating ability when damp, though.

About an hour out of Sydney (towards Canberra), there's a town called Goulburn that has a monument known as "The Big Marino". They were brought here by John MacArthur (later Govenor) who revolutionised trade in colonial Australia, not only with the product but the maufacturing process. The site at Goulburn was either the first or the largest of his stations.

I mean, er, yes, wool rocks! :D
