Dona nobis pacem.
Sep. 6th, 2007 09:45 pmLuciano Pavarotti died this morning. Donna nobis pacem.
"Good night, sweet prince, and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest"
It's times like these I wish I *knew* of a heavenly choir, and Pavarotti putting them all to shame with his magnificent voice.
I'm here listening to teasers, snippets of that transcendent tenor on iTunes, knowing that I'm a day late and a dollar short in wanting one song.
For my friends that loved Luciano, would you recommend a favorite song?
Thanx.

Date: 2007-09-07 06:38 am (UTC)OK, 50 words. But if I see more than 30 instances of any one letter, you're outa here, pal.
OK, ok, not counting the letters S, E, or N.
(seriously, maelefic, you kinda surprised me. Dunno who you are, but your taste in music alone has me deeply intrigued. You may be someone I know under a different name, or even more intrigueing, you may be the mysterious stranger who steps into the circle of light cast by the glow of an unpopulated comment field on Live Journal.
Yeah, yeah, so I dig purple noir prose. Deal with it.)
I started classical guitar lessons at age 5, but I doubt we've met before.
Date: 2007-09-07 10:29 am (UTC)50 words: Having not met Notasquirrel, and Reynardo only once (although I'd be inclined to say got along quite well), I should well mention that I'm in three bands with waitingman, who is long friends with Ms. Reynardo. I'm an eccentric polymath-wannabe with a distorted perspective on the universe.
Hrm, not sure if I broke the 30 singular character paradigm, but hey, it's a Friday night here!
Add me or not, I find your blog refreshing from the American steriotype and will continue to read with great verve and vigour ;)
Re: I started classical guitar lessons at age 5, but I doubt we've met before.
Date: 2007-09-07 02:23 pm (UTC)Yeah, I know I could look up polymath, but a strong urge towards laziness this morning coupled with a desire to see how you explain it means I won't.
So, what is a polymath?
And I am glad you find my writing interesting enough to read with verve and vigour.
I'm an idiot, but I'm not stupid
Date: 2007-09-08 12:58 am (UTC)A polymath is someone with broad knowledge on, you know, stuff. It basically involves having read lots, and desseminating said knowledge. In other words, I keep myself amused :D
I do find your writing refreshing, especially having come from the armed forces, which intrigues me even more.
I've just decided that I must eat some bacon. On toast. With cheese. Ooh, and a coffee wouldn't go astray...
Re: I'm an idiot, but I'm not stupid
Date: 2007-09-11 01:13 am (UTC)As for being in the military, well, all it takes these days is a pulse. Back when I joined up, you had to have a modicum of intellect, and it was a good way to possibly get some college and a bi-weekly paycheck. I joined in 79. It went down hill from there. Never did get a college degree, but then I have the academic attention span of a kitten on crack.
BTW, I have two towels. One in the trunk of my car, and the other is hanging over the back of my chair. In short, I know where *both* my towels are.
Re: I'm an idiot, but I'm not stupid
Date: 2007-09-11 02:13 am (UTC)Yeah, that's the impression I got, and I feel it's the same even here in Australia. I spent some time growing up in Canberra, where the Australian Defence Force Academy is located, and more than just a modicum of intelligence was required to get in. However, I overheard a conversation (almost) recently from an ADFA cadet whose leaning was definitely more towards the left end of the bell curve... *laughs at your kittie analogy* Can I use that one?
Three: One next to the computer, one in my washing pile and a third hanging off my mirror. Now all I need to do is discover the ingredients to a Gangalactic Gargleblaster!

Seriously? You mean the all-powerful God of Christianity couldn't create a voice comparable to or better than Luciano's? And since this is a loving and benevolent God, He took the merciful route of having Luciano suffer with the pains and treatments for pancreatic cancer for a year and a half at least. You know, instead of killing him off quickly and painlessly.
<headshake> And they wonder why I left the church...at least Mór Ríghan is forthright on what She wants and will/will not do.
