Happy Birthday, Omar.
May. 19th, 2003 11:23 amAccording to The Writer's Almanac, yesterday was the birthday of Omar Khayam:
"It's the birthday of Persian poet, philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer Omar Khayyam, born in Nishapur, Khurasan, Iran in 1048. When he was alive, he was famous for his scientific and mathematical achievements, which included a study of Euclid's definitions and extensive work on music and algebra. It wasn't until English poet Edward Fitzgerald translated his fragments of poetry into one great coherent work called the Rubaiyat that Khayyam became known as a poet. The poem encourages us to live life to the fullest and includes lines like:
"The moving finger writes, and, having writ,
Moves on, nor all they piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line
Sor all thy tears wash out a word of it. "
Oh, gods, how true this is. Especially in cases of "wrongwindowitis" on IRC.
Kindly keep your comments to yourself, Rich. *grin*
Edie
/me bites off and chews a tentacle. "Hmmm, rubbery."
