Wanderings
Oct. 20th, 2005 08:58 amI finally got a library card, and am now enjoying "The Yosemite" by John Muir. He had the soul of a poet, and I can almost hear his slight Scots brogue in his writings. Of course, that is helped by attending a monologue by Lee Stetson, who plays John Muir in performances in the evenings during the summer. Lee is a good actor, bringing Muir's love of the Sierra alive, calling up the enthusiasms and exuberance of the man.
Understand, Muir's writings can get tedious; Whole chapters without paragraphs describing in florid detail the various trees to be found. But he does so with such minute attention to detail, and with such loving care given to choosing words.
Like me, he was in love with a place.
Me, I prefer taking pictures to trying to describe this place. Amazing scenes every day.
In other news, Backpacker magazine (December issue) has a scathing article on working in the valley; "Yosemite on $7.38 an Hour". I can say that every single word of it is true. DNC is not amused.
More later!
Mary Jane, would you kindly email me? I know you're reading, you little minx.
