A day off.
May. 22nd, 2005 10:21 pmI'm taking the day off from hiking today. My legs have gone on strike from my hike to the top of Yosemite Falls yesterday.
On my way down from the top, I stopped to talk with a young couple who looked like they'd been on the road for months--or more rightly, on the trail. The woman offered me some manzanita berries, and in her hand was a huge plastic bag of berries, a beautiful reddish brown color. "We harvest them to eat. We eat them on the trail."
Her face was filthy, but she had the most beautiful sky blue eyes, made even more stunning by their gentle honesty and guilelessness. Her hair, a non-dwscript brown, hung in dreds to her waist. The man had darker blue eyes, and his face was tanned and dirty, too. His expression was of weariness, and that was probably due to the huge backpack he carried even as he sat resting, munching berries.
I sat on a low rock across from them, and we talked of things to eat in the wild. They asked if there was water at the top. I said yes, but be sure to filter it, there are parasites in it.
I was so dazed with fatigue I forgot to thank them for the berries, or offer them some honey packs I was carrying. I could have offered them water as well, I still had lots in my camelback.
Forgive my oversite, youngsters.
They looked so content. Blessings on them both.
