I'm here, I'm alive!
May. 7th, 2005 07:50 pmFor all those that are concerned, I have arrived in Yosemite Valley.
Brief recap: Thursday flew out to Sacramento and was picked up by my cousin. I spent the night at her house, and the following morning she told me that she was going to drive me to Yosemite. No train trip for me--I have yet to ide a train in the US for any appreciable time.
I'm jet lagged, and so if this seems disjointed, forgive me.
The trip was glorious. We didn't go in the way that gives the most spectacular view; instead, we took 140 in. The foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains are some of the most beautiful in the world, I think. Soft and gentle, and due to the heavy rains this year they were brilliant green. The sun was warm, and the sky was filled with incredible towering clouds. Golden poppies and royal blue lupines tinted the hills with swaths of color.
We stopped at a casino, and Cindy played $20, and won $105. She gave me $5, and I won $20. That effectively paid for our gas and lunch, I suppose. My winnings, that is.
We put the top down on her convertable, enjoyed the sun. How many chances am I going to have to drive to a new job in a red Mustang convertable? At higher elevations, though, it got cold pretty quick. At one point, there was a short, sharp hailstorm, and Cindy got beaned on the head! Up goes the lid, and we continue, with occasional stops to take pictures. We were both enjoying ourselves thoroughly.
We arrived at the HR department at about 2:30 local time, and I was warmly received by Jenn. I was told that I was going to be interviewing for a retail position. I got my meal card, and Cindy and I unloaded my stuff from the car and headed over for some lunch. The squirrels are bold, and we saw no one feeding them at all. It was rainy, and the only place to sit was on a deck. Luckily, the tables had umbrellas.
Cindy and I said our goodbyes, and I went off to join a training class. Basic safety course, standard stuff.
After the class, I was taken to the dorms--no tent cabin for me! It seems there's a possiblility that I will be able to get DSL in my room!
Moved all my stuff up, settled in. Met my roommate at about 2AM. Nice young woman, from New Orleans. She works the switchboard at the Ahwahnee lodge.
My room doesn't have much of a view, but is a few yards from one of the meadows. Across the meadow is a spectacular view of Half Dome. Pictures don't convey the beauty of this place. Mule deer arrived just after I did to do some grazing.
I'm still in shock, I suppose. Every once in a while it hits me; I'm in Yosemite. I live in Yosemite. I work in Yosemite.
I interviewed this morning, and it seems that I will be on the late shift at the Curry Village Gift Shop. This means 3-11:30. Not much time for chatting on IRC, or AIM. Two days a week I should be able to.
I'm about to head over to the computer center so that I can send this, along with emails.
I'm in heaven, and I didn't have to die to get here!

More later!
