After a bit of phone tag, I spoke with Rebecca in the HR department at DNC Yosemite Concessionaires this morning.

It seems that they assign you a job when you arrive, according to what their needs are at the time. April they are filling kitchen help and lodge house keeping jobs. I will be allowed to bid for other jobs after 60 days--and they prefer to move you around the same location.

This means that if I get a job at the Ahwahnee lodge as a room cleaner, I could bid for a job in the gift shop there.

This is good! I just need to get my foot in the door earlier for the best jobs.

I'm beginning to think I will go out at the end of April instead of May.

Also, I need to arrive during the week so that I can get set up in housing. Rebecca recommended arriving on a Friday so that I can have the weekend to myself.

I'm leaning toward driving instead of flying--I want to be able to go visit my cousin Cindy once I get there.

That would mean being able to stop and see friends as well on the way. But it also means more money, and that's pretty scarce these days.

Yes, it really is cheaper to fly than to drive. I figure that it's going to take about $300 in gas alone. Food, well, another $100 or so.

I'm thinking about $500 to drive out.

The main problem I see about driving is where are you going to put the car while working? You won't really need to use to get to work, so will you need to find a place to stow it or will one be provided?

Then of course, *having* a car may make it nice to go outside the park area if one desired.

Save up for the trip no matter what - it will cost more than you expect it too. It always does.

The cheapest unleaded gas in Los Angeles is $2.33 per gallon; you might want to see if you can find out what the prices are like up in the Yosemite area. I know San Diego was always 10 cents cheaper than L.A. so it might be better in Northern CA too, but in terms of your trip I would estimate your gas cost as high as possible.

I am figuring 10 refills at $30/tank--I normally pay about $20 here, at $1.99-2.02/gal. That's assuming about 300 miles per tank, BTW. I normally get about 385 miles to the tank.

I really don't plan to use my car much once I'm at Yosemite--I'd like to pick up a cheap bike for use in the valley. I just want to be able to go visit my cousin, and she lives about 150 miles north. That and I think laundry will be easier if I have a car to lug it back and forth.

laundry, visits, trips to the far side of the park (there are just some days when it just sucks to take a road trip on a bike), and runs outside the part for to occaisionally visit things like REAL grocery stores and other signs of civilization. Living on a park - especially a large one like yosemite - is fantastic, but there are some things about it that can drive a person nuts, like the population of tourists. However, you also might want to keep in mind that your co-workers will generally be friendly people...think about a college dorm, summer camp, or a military base-type situation...they will generally give you a ride, let you use their cars, etc. especially if you offer to pay 'em or just appreciate them for it.
