Google is a dangerous thing.
Mar. 24th, 2005 08:41 amSomewhere on the Yosemite website, there is a schedule for when they "take down the Half Dome cables".
Must be for mountain climbers, thought I, and kept reading. Tioga pass, Tuolumne Meadows, Big Oak Flat Road, Glacier
Point...
Days later, I ran across a website of a day trip to Half Dome. By a family. To the TOP of half dome. With teenagers. And pictures. There they were, the Half Dome Cables.
Two steel cables, threaded through eyes at the top of metal posts, I'd guess maybe 2-3' high, inserted into holes drilled into the granite. Two-by-fours are laid above each set of poles against the rock.

The idea intrigued me. "I could do that! Er, could I do that?" I don't know. But I can try.
So I thought I'd do a bit of dreaming. Provided I'm offered the job in Yosemite, why not plan a trip to the top of Half Dome?
So I Googled: Half Dome Cables, and found one of the COOLEST websites EVAR. Summitpost.org Incredible resource of information on mountain climbing routes, with BREATHTAKING images.
I spent most of yesterday looking at this incredible website. I've learned more about Yosemite Valley than I ever thought I could. Like, there *is* a way to the top of Bridal Veil Falls that doesn't require mountain climbing skills.

See how the falls is at the bottom of a very wide V? That's called a hanging valley. For some reason, I really want to explore that area; I'm thinking an overnight in that valley just to say I have.

This picture was taken from up the large mountain on the left of the falls in the previous picture. Notice the small pool in the center? That's the top of the falls. Notice the larger pool in the center on the left? I want to soak my feet in that pool.
Gods, I love teh internets. I figure it took me about as long to find that picture via my meandering through Summitpost.org as it would have if I'd actually gone from the floor of the valley up Spires Gully, and then walked down Bridal Veil Creek to the pools.

And yes, I do intend to begin a fitness program. But first, I need to finish quitting smoking. Day ten, still no smoking, and I haven't killed anyone. Yet.
