Hot-selling bracelets help students raise funds for libraries:
All right, yes, I'm shilling for Salinas Public libraries. In the spirit of full disclosure I state on the record the following:
I am a former resident of Salinas California.
I have used the Public libraries mentioned in this article.
I have no contact with the Public Library of Salinas.
I have spoken with one city council member since writing a letter to the editor on the phone.
I am not receiving any funds at all from the City of Salinas, the Public Library, Monterey County.
I have no relatives in Salinas, California, nor am I in contact with any friends in Salinas California.
I will not accept any funds for this project.
I intend to place an order for two bracelets, one for tsunami relief, and one for Salinas Libraries.
I added the area code as I remember it to the phone number listed above. It may be incorrect. If so, please let me know and I will edit it.
Please consider buying a bracelet or a dozen to help raise awareness and to help fund the Salinas Public Libraries.

Hot-selling bracelets help students raise funds for libraries
By JULIA REYNOLDS
Herald Staff Writer
During the same week Salinas gave layoff notices to its librarians, Salinas High School students have mobilized to raise money to try to save the city's libraries and recreation centers.
On Tuesday, the school's chapter of the Health Occupation Students Association began selling lime-green $3 bracelets stamped with "Save Salinas" during their lunch break. The students are also selling $2 teal-colored silicone bracelets for tsunami victim relief efforts and, after just a few days, the students are ready to order thousands more of the hot-selling bracelets.
Other area schools have joined in the effort. Everett Alvarez, Alisal and Carmel High Schools, and Washington Middle School will add thousands more bracelets to the group's next order, which will lower the cost per bracelet from $1.90 to 50 cents.
La Paz, El Sausal and Harden Middle Schools have also placed orders for several hundred "Save Salinas" bracelets.
Association members will meet next week to decide which organizations will receive the proceeds.
Students aren't the only ones supporting the effort. Biology teacher Theresa Harrison said city library staffers and local businesses have been buying bracelets all week.
Karissa Schubin, activities director for the school, said people are stopping by every day to buy. She encourages city officials to get involved and support the students' efforts.
The City Council decided late last year that it must close the city's three libraries in order to balance the city's precariously unbalanced budget. The libraries are expected to close by midyear but a precise schedule has not been set. The move would make Salinas the largest U.S. city without a municipal library.
"At least purchase a bracelet," Schubin said Friday. "That would be the first step to show their support. The students are saddened to see the libraries and rec centers close. They're the ones trying to change their future."
Schubin said a number of students are also planning to attend a candlelight vigil Monday evening in front of the Steinbeck branch library.
To buy a bracelet To buy "Save Salinas" or "Tsunami Relief" bracelets, call the Salinas High School finance office at (408)796-7440 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
