I just received a call from my friend Adam, who called to wish me a happy birthday. I told him about my act of bravery, that I was scared, that I wasn't sure that I would be able to pay for college, that while I'm working, it's part time and my employer really can't afford to pay me, and that my unemployment runs out in January. All the while he was saying "That's good".
I wasn't sure how to take it. I wondered if he was distracted, and not really listening. Adam is too nice to pull my leg, and so I asked "Why is that good?"
"Because when you're at bottom, you can only go up."
Adam is one of the most up-beat people I know, with a love that shines from his face for the entire world, and to see him with his infant son Matthew is as holy and sacred a sight as any Orthodox icon of the Madonna and child. He's funny as hell, writes beautiful music, and is a poet besides.
Adam is Jewish. Adam works at his father's mortuary home. Adam embalms the dead, cares for grieving families. At the end of the call, I wished him a good day. He said "you know where I work, one person's good day is another person's tregedy.
I told him that he was one of the happiest people I know, that his love for life may have come from working so near to death, an he replied that he's always been that way. "Then I can't think of a better person to work in the funerary business".
So huzzah, I've survived another year.
