That's a tough question. I should have been more specific, I think. Usenet, Live Journal, blogs, that sort of thing are public in nature. It's out there pretty much for everyone to see. (unless someone makes an entry that is friends only, sorta-fing)
No, I mean, like read an article and *emailed* the author, more privately.
Or initiated one-on-one dialog.
That sort of thing. Does this make it clearer? Edie
...but then RASFWJ (aka rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan) is somewhat of an entity unto itself, even on Usenet.
Here's the deal:
I got into the WOT (aka Wheel of Time) series by Robert Jordan a few years back and did some web-surfing on that topic. One of the things I found was the WOT FAQ, produced by the combined effort of a number of people then resident on RASFWRJ. I was intrigued enough to join the group, and I'm still reading and posting there today, albiet mostly off-topic.
But, in the course of becoming a denizen of RASFWRJ (aka Darkfriend or DF), I have emailed and IMed off the group with a number of the members. I participate in a PBEM RPG game which has nothing to do with the WOT, and all the other people in that game are or were at one point DFs. I have met more than a dozen DFs in person at the various socials we get together at, and the next one I plan to attend is in Chicago at NYs. In fact, one of my boyfriends is a DF.
So I would hope that *that* certainly qualifies. I have talked to many of the people responsible for that WOT FAQ offlist and met not a few of them, and as a matter of record, *my* name is now on that FAQ as an assistant in compiling the most recent version.
How about people one met through usenet, but did not exclusively converse with only on usenet. Like Jeff from rgfs, who I've now met in person three times. Or various a.dbs authors, who I met at one or both of the two Gatherings I attended. Several of these people are also on LJ now, of course, but I initially 'met' them elsewhere.
