Oct. 14th, 2004 11:44 amSometimes having pets hurts like hell.
I just found my ferret in his litter box. He's been loosing weight, hasn't been eating or drinking much, and is reduced to skin and bones. He's still breathing, but very out of it. The worst of it is that he's not even able to get out of his own feces.
I jsut washed him up--he's very cold, and so I thought a gentle rinsing with warm water would make him feel more comfortable. He's wrapped in a warm towel, in front of a warm fire. I don't expect him to live much longer.
This is Rhode Island, where the laws have only changed recently about having ferrets as pets. Very difficult to find a vet that knows how to put down a ferret humanely. If there is such a thing as painless euthanasia for ferrets, that is. From what I understand, they have to hit the heart with a toxin via injection. Very painful, and still they die very slowly.
He doesn't seem to be in any pain, and is slipping from this life gently. At least that is what I have to tell myself. Clean and warm, away from the hassles of dogs and cats and with the occasional scritch of affection.
He's 8 years old. Techi gave him to me shortly after we got together.
Ferrets are better than prozak, I used to say. I think I am going to need prozak when this is over.
