Well, opening day went without a hitch. We managed to actually get the "Carver Mutants" to enjoy themselves, a rare feat worthy of high praise according to some veterans. The faire site is located in Carver, MA, and every year the opening day is a freebie for residents of Carver. For some reason, they have gained a reputation as being surly, humor-challenged and about as pleasant as a confronting a crowd of in-bred rednecks on the back roads of Louisiana.

I'm not sure why. I've never had any problems with humor-impairment among the good folk of Carver. I'm baffled by the reputation.

Opening weekend is always tough. You struggle to remember where you are supposed to be, and trying to be funny at the same time is damn near impossible. I've opted not so much for the funny role, but more for one of support. Lady Gytha MacGregor is appreciated, is exempt from having to be funny, and can pretty much have the run of the fair. I rather like that. I stick by Kat for the most part, except when she is in the Royal Review, or at lunch. I do have to be at the gate at 1:30, but I rather like that. I've got a good bunch of folks to play with there. Rich, our resident Duke Aiden O'Felon (affectionately called "Dukie" by most of us) outranks Gytha, but she manages to cow him with her forthright (read blunt like sledgehammer) Scots manner. He and I managed a passable bit based on his accusation that Lady Piper is no lady.

I think with time it will get better.

Another reason why opening weekend is tough is because it is three days long. This means three days of heat, huge amounts of dust, and in particular, not enough water. The water onsite is foul tasting, tainted by the copper pipes it's been sitting in since last October. The only thing that makes it passable is ice. Last year they had a large container of icewater on the dais, but this year, just a jug that is refilled from the tap.

Which reminds me, I want to clean up the large jug I have and use that, fill it with water and freeze it. I think it will be fine over the weekend that way, and will hold enough water.

There, it's clean, and I'll fill it with fresh water and a bit of lemon juice tomorrow and put it in the chest freezer to freeze over night. When it goes dry, I'll have them fill it with ice at the site.

I've managed to come down with renn faire crud. The dust and germs onsite have worked pnuematic havoc with my lungs. I've got a low-grade fever and a dry cough that racks me too frequently.

I should be fine by Saturday. Which reminds me, I've got to reschedule my camping for next weekend, if possible, thunderstorms predicted for this week. Le sigh.
