Pascifism and the "good war"
Jul. 29th, 2004 05:55 pmI've been thinking about pascifism lately. I'd like to know if any of my readers are dyed-in-the-wool pascifists, and if so, how did you come to that position? Of course, I'd also like to know what your position is on the so-called "just war", if such an animal exists, and if not, what would you do in place of war?

Date: 2004-08-01 12:35 pm (UTC)Dyed in the wool pacifist here. I truly believe that thousands of years from now, people will look back on our society the way we look at the cavemen -- my optimistic view is that they will think us barbaric for using murder and killing each other to "solve" our problems.
As for "just war" -- I find it a horrifying fact of life today that sometimes war is necessary, if only because we sometimes deal with madmen who will not listen to anything else and in order to stop them from destroying their country and their own people, have to be overpowered.
I'm not wise enough to suggest an alternative to war. I would hope that the madmen leaders will someday all be replaced by reasonable men and women and that discussions, summits, even debates will take the place of war.
