On the road
Jul. 7th, 2004 09:40 pmJuly 4th, on the way to work, Rt 6 RI.
I saw a doe bounding across the road,
her fawn a leap or two behind
something told me to slow down even though
they'd cleared the tarmac long before I'd arrived
I'm glad I did because
off to my left, soft-spotted as the dawn, the second young stood watching
dame and sibling bound away into the underbrush.
The incautious fawn cried with its whole body
"Wait for me, I'm coming too!"
And without a glance in my direction
Likewise sprang across the road.
No more than 5 feet from my immobile grille.

Date: 2004-07-07 10:25 pm (UTC)That happened to me once - driving on an unfamiliar road I downshifted and slowed... just before the deer came into my headlights.
Lucky us. Lucky deer.
