Found out that the place I was looking at does indeed have broadband internet access. This is looking good! Summary: $85K, log-cabin (fake) with propane heat, .7 acre lot, dead eand street, lots of parking, minimal garden space, fieldstone fireplace;  wall-to-wall carpet. The outside looks rough. It's a fake log cabin siding--the curved outer edges cut from logs are nailed to the outer surface, and they stick out on the conrers to give the apperance of a real log-wall cabin. Gutters are bent in places, and badly hung over the front door. Is tiny, like postage stamp.

Can you plant a garden there at all? The ground looks very rocky. The house itself is nice and doesn't look too small from that photo.

Remus,

That house could probably fit in your living room. It's only about 650 sq' total. And yes, gardening is going to be a challenge. It's on a stone outcropping.

However, there are ways around that, with some good benefits.

More pics on the way, stay tuned!

Raised beds. Build some beds and haul in some topsoil for your veggies. You can build beds out of damn near anything - I have one in my yard built of an old papasan chair frame, chicken wire, plastic film and duct tape. (It doesn't look near as hideous as it sounds.)

Gives you improved drainage, too.

But you're a veteran gardener, so you know all that :D

pre-zactly! Raised beds is just what I am thinking. I might go with something a bit more basic such as long rows of something called "lasagna gardening";

http://www.lasagnagardening.com/index.htm

The idea is that you layer leaves, grass, manure, hay, what-have-you in stages. It's a good way to break up the soil beneath, and makes planting very easy.

I've done it here at this house.

Windows look like they'll need a big of work.

It looks small for a house, big for a cabin. :-)

But broadband is good.
