I can't reveal the names...
Apr. 9th, 2004 03:09 pmI can't reveal the names, but I can tell the story just the same.
For those of you who aren't technically inclined, I'll keep it as technically simple as possible.
I work for a company that contracts tech support to major corporations around the world. Occasionally a server will become unavailable, and a flurry of calls will arrive, spiking our stats. Recently a VPN server went down, and the phones went wild. Our involvement is limited with that server, because it's a service that our client has hired and we are only obligated to reset pass words and such on it. The owning corporation does the real work on it.
The man in the seat next to me told this story after a call:
"I get this guy with an English accent, asking why he can't get into the remote access portal, and I told him that it's because that particular server is not available at this time.
"The guy says (here my co-worker puts on a faux-Brit accent) 'Well, that's what we get for hiring you Americans to support us, isn't it? When are you yanks going to get your act together and bring it back up again?'
"I told him that 'as a matter of fact, sir, the server isn't owned by (name of the company I work for), but (Name of MAJOR British Technology Corporation). The server is located in London, and I'm sure that they are working very hard to bring it back on line' .
The caller hung up on him.
