Taken wholecloth from Reynardo's Journal, and then patched with my answers

Where was I ...

When John F. Kennedy was shot (22nd Nov 1963)?
I had just turned 4 years old. I have a distinct memory of watching the black and white television in the living room, seeing Jackie Kennedy trying to scramble over the trunk of the convertable on her hands and knees. Jack Kennedy slumped in the seat behind her. And my grandmother and my mother sitting on the sofa, arms around each other, weeping. The address was 123 Dunecrest, Monterey California

When Man landed on the Moon. (20 July 1969)
Summer session, and I was 9 years old. I remember sitting in front of my granmother's television, watching the "...one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" and beig disappointed it was being transmitted in black and white. Grandma had a color TV by then. When I saw the cover of Life magazine, I thought it was in black and white, too, but realised it was color by something on Armstrong's suit as he stepped onto the lunar surface from the ladder. My address was 50 Villa, Salinas, Ca.

When Mt. St. Helens blew (18 May 1980)
Ah, this one makes me smile. I was getting up to go potty and get a drink of water when I heard this noise. I thought it was blasting at the quarry just down the road from us, but then I realized that it was sunday. I thought beifly that it might have been a jet or something from NAS Whidebey Island, where I was stationed, and less than a mile away. I shrugged my shoulders, and went back to bed with my first husband. And as near as I can figure, that is when my son was conceived! He was a bit over due, but he was born March 9, 1981. I lived in Green tree apartments, Old Oak Harbor Rd, Oak Harbor, Washington.

When John Lennon was shot. ( 8 Dec 1980)
Same address, and it was my husband who told me that he had died. I remember holding him as he cried. He was drunk, if I remember. I was about 6 months along.

When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (28 Jan 1986)
I remember walking into work at GSE, AIMD 900 div, NAS Barber's Point, HI. Everyone was in the Maint. Office, watching the explosion. Someone had drawn a picture of it on the chalk board. Over the next few days, people began signing it, writing things on it. I wish I had gotten a picture of it before it was erased a few days later. Ellison Onizuka's remains were never found. But he was honored with a Buddhist ceremony, and was originally from Hawaii.

When the Berlin Wall fell (7 July 1989)
I think I was on Blackstone Blvd in Providence RI by then, if I recall. I remember not having a television, but I remember reading about it, and then sining "Break them on down, break them on down, break them on down these walls between us!"

When Princess Di was killed (31 August 1997)
Techi woke me that morning, telling me that Princess Di was dead. I was horrified, and saddened. Here was a lovely young woman, rather shy, who like Jacqueline Bouvier was thrust into the limelight. And it utterly changed her forever. And yes, Rey's "call from the palace" crossed my mind, too.

When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (11 Sept 2001)
I had been out in the garden, cleaning it up from the summer that morning. It was etched on my mind--that incredible blue sky, not a single cloud. The rich, sweet loam , the smell of old tomato vines and basil. Pansies making a return showing, and lemon balm pungent. Beets still growing. Buckwheat husks for mulch, rustling as I smoothed them back over bare spots.

I came into the house, took a shower, got ready for work. Got in the car, and turned on Public Radio. And was utterly stunned to hear about the Towers.
Arriving at work in a state of shock, and the call center eerily quiet. MSNBC on all computers, and that endless loop of the planes hitting the tower. People silently weeping. One call, where someone bgain shouting obscenities at the agent, declaring that the bank was caving in to 'them' because a nearby branch closed for safety reasons. That agent was told to hang up. It was the ONLY time that happened that day, if I recall. Later, we had an influx of Stock broker agents that were brought up from the city-- our affiliated discount brokerage was in a building facing the towers, and they had been in a meeting whe the planes hit. Huge picture window, and they stood in horror as they saw it happen before them. I spoke to a young man who had been there, and his face was so placid as he told the story. I think he was still in shock. Others told of the smell afterwards.

Come to think of it, that was the last time I worked in my garden actively. I planted potatoes last spring. I wanted to go below ground.

I was in my garden when it happened.

Clear, cold, bright day in New England. Quiet in the house. Still looking through for the Letter To God. Came across this post. Will be adding my whereabouts later in my lj. Usually there is another: Where were you when the lights went out in Massachusetts (and surrounding area)? But then, in the '60's, you were in California? so it may not have affected you?? But it seems that a lot affects you, which I love, because I never know what to expect when I go to your lj. One thing I can be sure of...I'll love whatever it is that you post!
