For those that don't know, I don't own a television. I don't watch it. I find it vacuous, tedious, trite, and hypnotic. But occasionally I get wind of something stellar through my network of friends who *do* watch television. Wait, no, my friends are not vacuous, tedious or trite; They also have the ability to turn the TV off, it seems. I don't.
Instead, I have The Internet--TV I can talk to. And people listen--how wonderful.
One of the things that has come to my attention (via
fallonmay) is this: http://www.shardsoglass.com/
Stunning work here. The TV commercial is sobering. If you can, go watch.
In other news: If you ever are offered an extended warranty when you buy a major appliance, Buy it. Budget for it. Trust me, trust me, TRUST me. Since we moved here, Techi and I have bought three name brand appliances: A washer, a stove, and a dishwasher. All three of them have at one time or another have waited until *just* outside the warranty period to malfunction. The frustration of a stove that won't turn on at all, or a dishwasher that make rattling noises so loud you can hear outside in the front yard, or a washer who's basket has frozen in place is bad; Add to that the BS you get when you call the service repair folks and their tone turns snide and condescending when you say "No, I don't have an extended warranty..."
Last night I decided to implement a plan that has been brewing in my head for the last week or so: "A Load a Day, And Put Away". Yes, I admit it. I hate doing laundry. I have piles of dirty clothes and no good excuse for them--I have a working set of washing and drying machines in my very own basement. I will spare you lurid descriptions--I have have no pride in my lack of housekeeping details; and my talent for prose is no good justification for turning your stomach.
So after a VERY full day yesterday, I came home and put in a load of laundry. Fine, it completes, and just to get a jump on the rest of it, I decide to do a load of sheets, towels, and such to help clear a bit more. Fine. I come down at the end of the cycle, and lo! The towels, the blanket, the sheets are sitting in a lump at the bottom of the basket in the machine.
Not plastered against the side from centrifugal (centripetal?) force from the last spin. The basket won't spin by hand, either. This Is Not A Good Sign. According to
malloc1024, this prolly means seized bearings. It's 11:30 at night. I ask Techi if the machine is still under warranty--Yes! it is! And on the receipt from the store we bought it from is the number for service. I was going to call to find out what time they would be open to make appointments so that I could get a jump on it this morning.
Imagine my surprise when I was eventually put through to a human being. I had been asked for my phone number by an automated system--and the human addressed me by name. She also verified the appliance--"Your washer, right? The one that is on warranty?" She scheduled a repair tech to come to my house on Tuesday morning.
The store? Sears. The make of the washer? Kenmore. So yeah, for $170, I just saved myself from having to buy a new washer, I think. More info on that later. But man, it's just a comfort to know that it's not going to cost anything to have it repaired.
As for the laundry, yes, I still intend to do "A Load a Day, And Put Away". I'm going to be packing up and going to the laundromat shortly. I'll take a good book, or perhaps my Hardanger embroidery, and also my package for
scascot to be mailed, and do it the easy way. "Wash/Dry/Fold 50¢ Lb". Oh, wait--that stuff that came out of the washer is wet! *sigh* OK, so I will do *that* load myself.

Date: 2004-02-13 08:28 am (UTC)What pisses me off is when the warrentee expires and they try to get you to sign up for another three years. For what you pay for the extention you could almost buy a whole new machine!
Sounds like your friend had a streak of ill luck. Or maybe they have a problem with the electrical system?
Wash them clothes!
