A child climbs
against blue sky
on playground steel
poised to fly

red hair against clear air
red shirt that holds no hurt
plaid pants and red at that
red shoes on balanced feet

an impish smile wreathes
her impish face
eons look from darkened eyes.
she is older than her 6 or 7 years

Her body
folded down
head up
hair tip tickling
beside her lip
she wants to know
"do you see
me climbing here,
I'm trying to be brave
and safe at once."
