Fact vs. truth
Aug. 16th, 2007 11:35 amI really should have stated this long ago, but better late than never. For purposes of this journal, the following applies:
Fact is objective; Such as the atmosphere of Earth is X% oxygen, or 2+2=4. These are simple examples, not meant to preclude more complex facts such as statements that either include or assume qualifiers, like "The sky is blue (unless you are color blind, there's a gorgeous sunset, or it is overcast or night)". Facts are subject to change.
Truth(s) is/are subjective; These include statements presented as fact, such as "Edwards is the best candidate for president", usually arrived at by careful consideration of the facts, and are actually opinions, and open to debate.
I hold some truths as currently not debatable. F'rex, the truth that women have a right to safe, legal abortion on demand is not debatable, anymore than 2+2=4 is debateable. However, that is subject to (possible)change as well. But not right now.
Any questions?
