Can somebody tell me why...

I once heard it said that human females are the only mammals with breasts that are permanently enlarged. Most female mammals have breasts that don't swell until they are lactating. Why do we have breasts?
Anatomically, breasts are nothing more than bags of fat globules around milk ducts that are mostly never used. Why? Are those milk ducts in need of insulation, or protective packing? Even when they are not producing?
Why do my breasts look like I'm lactating? What evolutionary role does it fulfill? I'm hoping one of my more knowledgeable readers can tell me. I sure as hell don't know.
