I'm all right, nobody worry 'bout me...
Aug. 27th, 2009 07:35 amIt's been an exciting 24 hours here in Yosmite; Rockfall, wildfires, smoke, Ahwahnee guest having to rub elbows with Curry guests...
But I'm ok, really I am.
Some info--Rockfall at 1:30 pm yesterday behind the swanky Ahwahnee Hotel has led to a "precautionary" closure until Friday, August 27th. High paying guests were evacuated, and they were brought to Curry Village Dining Pavilion for information on accommodations. Charles Cuvelier, Deputy Park Ranger, and Dan Jensen, Chief Operating Officer of the concessionaire were on hand to answer questions.
A scheduled management fire within the park got out of hand, and has closed off an access into the valley from Highway 120 at Crane Flat. It's huge, folks. This is the largest fire I've ever seen. They are bringing in air tankers with retardant today to get it under control. Last night I went up highway 41 for some pictures--safely across the Merced River Canyon, way up high. I could feel the heat in the breeze, and hear chainsaws--lots of chainsaws--as the firefighters tried to get it back under control. This one affects me most. I was supposed to use that road tonight to go have dinner with a friend at Tuolumne Meadows Lodge.
All in all, it's been hectic. But I'm all right.
Forgot to add that I was interviewed by California Report, KQED radio. It will air at 8 AM this morning.
