Boo-Boy update
Dec. 7th, 2004 09:10 pmBoo-Boy went back to the vet today, and I was expecting that they would be treating him for heartworm. However, he's down to 50 lbs, (which is up from the 48 lbs last visit), and with the unidentified mass in his chest cavity, the vet was worried that the treatment would be too much for him. So instead, he put Boo on Heartgard, the once-a month wormer. heartworms have a limited life-span, and the medication will prevent re-infection with babies in the mean time. It's a gentler treatment, and won't stress his system as much as a more aggressive treatment would.
I stopped off at PetCo on the way back, picked up some canned dog food (lamb and rice). He gets one can a day, split three times. He seems to like it, and it's a good way to get him to eat his antibiotics that were prescribed at the emergency vet. He is also getting glucosamine-chondroitin tablets, and those have helped greatly. He no longer limps at all, his back leg/hip seems to be working much better. He eats those like treats from my hand, too, so that's good.
Once we get his weight back up, I'll have that mass looked at again, another set of X-rays to start.
He seems to be happy, spends most of his time on the sofa curled up. And I am giving him extra pets and scritchles.
